Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), a member of the National Security Working Group, released a statement following President Obama’s pledge to work with Congress to increase assistance to moderate opposition members in Syria.

“For years, I have been pushing the Administration for a more robust response to the crisis in Syria because I believe it is in the long-term security interest of the United States. Regimes and terrorist groups that plot against the U.S. every day - like the Iranian regime, Hezbollah and Al Qaeda have too much at stake in this region. Most recently, I sent a letter to President Obama urging greater support for the moderate military opposition. President Obama's announcement today that he intends to work with Congress to provide more training and equipment to the moderate Syrian opposition is an important step.  After meeting recently with opposition President Jarba, I am even more convinced that we must change the momentum on the ground to set the stage for any viable political solution.  As long as Assad has dominance of the skies over Syria, he will continue to flout UN Security Council resolutions and terrorize the Syrian people.”
