Internal Revenue Service
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is the revenue service of the United States federal government. The agency is a bureau of the Department of the Treasury, and is under the immediate direction of the Commissioner of Internal Revenue. The IRS is responsible for collecting taxes and the interpretation and enforcement of the Internal Revenue Code.
The federal filing season for the 2016 tax year will run from January 23, 2017, to the deadline of April 18, 2017. The IRS will not process returns prior to January 23.
A new law to address fraud and identity theft requires the IRS to hold all refunds on returns containing the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) until February 15. Affected refunds will start being processed that day, but taxpayers are cautioned to allow time for processing and transfer to financial institutions. Factoring in weekends and the Presidents’ Day holiday, many affected taxpayers may not have access to their refunds until the week of February 27
