Passport

A U.S. passport is your key to international travel. When presented abroad, it is a request to foreign governments to permit you to travel or temporarily reside in their territories and access all lawful, local aid and protection. It allows you access to U.S. Consular services and assistance while abroad. Most importantly, it allows you to re-enter the United States upon your return home.

The Department of State’s Passport Services Directorate issues U.S. passports to traveling Americans. DOS protects the integrity of the U.S. passport as proof of U.S. citizenship at home and around the world.

Note:

The Department of State is expecting an increase in passport applications during 2016 continuing through 2018.  With this in mind, we encourage passport applicants to apply for or renew U.S. passports well ahead of planned travel, as we anticipate longer than average wait times for passport processing over the coming months.

In planning, applicants should allow at least 6 weeks for routine service or at least 3 weeks for expedited service. The expedited service costs an additional $60.

If traveling in less than 2 weeks, or if a U.S. passport is needed for a foreign visa within 4 weeks, an application should be submitted at a Department of State passport agency.  For an appointment call the National Passport Information Center toll-free at 1-877-487-2778 or TDD/TDY at 1-888-874-7793. Customers must pay the $60 expedite fee and provide a travel itinerary when applying at a passport agency.

We also advise travelers to check the passport expiration date for every family member. Knowing the passport expiration date may help avoid costly travel delays. Some countries require a passport have at least six months validity remaining.   Additional documentation may be necessary when renewing a minor’s passport.
