YORK, PA- Today, in York, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) joined Mayor John S. Brenner, Police Commissioner Mark L. Whitman and local law enforcement officials to announce $273,276 in federal law enforcement funding for York through the Byrne Grant program. The funding is being made available through the recently enacted American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

“These grants will help York support activities that ensure the safety of their citizens,” said Senator Casey.  “One of the objectives of the recovery plan is to help governments revitalize their communities and these funds will help make communities safer.”

"The City of York is grateful for this funding," said Mayor John S. Brenner. "We have vehicles in our police fleet that should have been retired and this funding will enable us to purchase four police vehicles to add to our existing fleet."

The Byrne program is a grant program designed to help state and local governments control and prevent crime and further develop the criminal justice system.

The City of York will use the $273,276 that it received through the Recovery Act for the following purposes:

·                    Purchase badly needed police vehicles.

·                    Enhance the technology of the Department by replacing outdated computer   equipment.

·                    Enhance the security of the department through upgrading an access card system around the building.

·                    Purchase of TASERS to allow each officer working at a given time this less lethal alternative when dealing with violent individuals.

·                    Upgrade forensic capabilities.

·                    Purchase additional radios for officers and vehicles
