Senator Bob Casey Delivers Weekly Democratic Address
Following three recent mass shootings that claimed the lives of 34 people in Gilroy, El Paso and Dayton, Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) delivers this week’s Weekly Democratic Address. In the address, Senator Casey outlines the immediate need for the Senate to vote on the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 that the House passed over 160 days ago on February 27th, 2019. He emphasizes that gun violence is a public health epidemic that is plaguing our cities and communities every day and this week was no exception as we witnessed another horrific shooting in Philadelphia where six police officers were injured. Recent reporting in that case indicates that the gunman involved would not have been able to acquire a firearm with a proper background check due to his multiple felony convictions. Senator Casey explicitly calls on Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring the Senate back to pass lifesaving background checks legislation that would prevent tragedies like the ones we have seen this summer. In closing, he argues that we owe it to the victims, survivors and families of these mass shootings to take meaningful action on gun violence legislation, while also fighting hateful extremism and white supremacy.
