WASHINGTON, DC-U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, released the following statement on the announcement by President Barack Obama that his Administration will help unemployed workers obtain Pell Grants to attend community colleges:

“President Obama has taken the initiative to help unemployed workers receive training and education at community colleges.  By allowing unemployed workers to become eligible for Pell Grants, we can help give people additional skills to prepare for the future.  Better yet, this is a proposal that requires no congressional action and can be implemented without delay.”

Earlier this year, Senator Casey introduced legislation to reimburse community colleges that offer free tuition to workers who have lost their jobs.  This proposal was based on the example of Pennsylvania community colleges that offered free tuition on their own to displaced workers.
