Scranton, Allentown, Williamsport, Swissvale, Uniontown and West View to Receive Funds
WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) announced that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has awarded more than $3.6 million over three years to help six Pennsylvania communities hire, preserve or rehire police officers.
“This funding will help make our streets safer and our communities more secure,” said Senator Casey. “Assistance to put more officers on the street is especially important at a time when Pennsylvania’s communities are facing difficult budget decisions.”
Funding is available through the DOJ’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program (CHP). Earlier this year, Senator Casey strongly urged congressional leaders to reconsider proposed cuts to the COPS program, citing its positive impact helping Pennsylvania communities hire and train new officers, acquire new crime-fighting technology and test and develop new innovative policing strategies.
CHP funding goes directly to law enforcement agencies to hire, preserve, and/or rehire officers in an effort to increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.
