WASHINGTON, DC-U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) today applauded a new report issued by Families USA detailing how the National Institute of Health (NIH) funding to states creates jobs, helps develop communities that are focused on advanced biomedical research and sustains America’s leadership in medical research.  The report titled “In Your Own Backyard: How NIH Funding Helps Your State’s Economy” details the actual benefits of NIH research awards to all 50 states.

“This reports illustrates the benefit of NIH funding for not only medical research in the U.S. and around the world, but also the positive economic impact for the U.S. and Pennsylvania,” said Senator Casey.  “In the U.S. Senate, I have been a strong supporter of increased funding for the NIH and we still have more to do.”

In FY 2007, Pennsylvania received $1.436 billion in NIH funding making it one of seven states to receive more than $1 billion in funding and the fifth largest recipient of NIH funding overall.  For every dollar of NIH funding Pennsylvania generates $2.32 in economic output, making it one of the top ten states in this category. With the NIH funding Pennsylvania created 21, 262 jobs and was one of six states whose total wages from jobs created exceeded $1 billion.
