WASHINGTON, DC - I was very disturbed by the reports that Pakistan had arrested CIA informants who assisted in efforts to pursue Osama bin Laden. This story came after reports alleging that Pakistan had tipped off bomb makers in advance of a security forces raid. These actions are outrageous and indicate that the government of Pakistan is not fully committed to rooting out extremism within its borders.

The Pakistani people have sacrificed greatly in the struggle against extremist groups in their midst. Thousands of Pakistani civilians and security forces have died. That is precisely why it is so unfortunate that the Pakistani government is not fully committed to confronting this threat.

I have been very patient with respect to this critical relationship. But, I am compelled to speak the truth when the stakes are so high for the American people, U.S. troops and the people of Pakistan. In my judgment, recent developments are unacceptable and merit a serious examination of the U.S. aid package to Pakistan. The Senate should hold hearings so we can have a full accounting of the Pakistan’s efforts to combat terrorism.
