Washington DC- U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released a statement regarding the Senate Republican defense appropriations bill that was brought up this afternoon.

“Funding the base operations of the Department of Defense through an accounting gimmick is no way to support the servicemembers and their families who sacrifice so much for our nation’s defense. As Secretary Carter has said, this approach is unsound.

Democrats have offered to negotiate a bipartisan budget that ends the sequester once and for all for both defense and non-defense spending. It is time for Senate Republicans to come to the table. The sequester has devastated job creating medical research funding, slashed investment in our schools and infrastructure along with harming programs like the Community Development Block Grant Program that lead directly to economic growth. It’s time to move beyond gimmicks and instead negotiate a bipartisan budget deal that maintains critical investments for the middle class, bolsters growth, and strengthens our national defense.”
