WASHINGTON, DC-U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) today met with former Senator, Presidential nominee and national hunger advocate George McGovern to discuss domestic and international anti-hunger and nutrition policy.

“Addressing the issue of hunger is not only the right thing to do, it is the moral thing to do,” said Senator Casey. “It was truly an honor to meet with Senator McGovern today.  He has been a leader on this issue for more than 45 years and it is my hope that I can begin to take the reins and advance the issue of hunger in the United States Senate."

At today’s meeting, Senator Casey and Senator McGovern discussed ways to advance policy addressing the issue of hunger in the United States Senate.  The members talked about how more than 40 years after the issue of combating hunger became a national priority, there are still an estimated 35 million people living in this country who continue to face food insecurity.

As a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, Senator Casey urged the committee to increase investments in nutrition programs and has introduced bipartisan legislation to provide funds for food assistance.  He was among the first Members of Congress to address the global food crisis by drafting in early March a letter to Senate appropriators, signed by six other Members, advocating an expansion of emergency funds in the upcoming supplemental appropriations bill.
