Casey Presses New VA Secretary for Additional Action on Legionnaires’ Disease in VA Facilities, Strengthened Whistleblower Protections and Management Reforms

Washington, DC  Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released a letter to new VA Secretary Robert McDonald pushing for the VA to take steps to better protect VA patients from Legionnaires’ Disease and implement strengthened whistleblower protections and management reforms. In his letter, Casey called on the VA Secretary to commit the VA to following state and local disclosure laws when it comes to outbreaks of infectious diseases. Additionally Casey pressed the new VA Secretary to ensure that CDC sampling and federal drinking water standards are used at the VA Pittsburgh Health System and across the country.

“Last night the Senate took steps to reform the VA but there’s more to do. Specifically, additional reforms that I’ve worked on with Senator Burr are needed to require the VA to appropriately disclose outbreaks of infectious diseases,” Senator Casey said. “I’m urging the VA to quickly commit to maintaining high drinking water quality standards and implementing reforms that protect whistleblowers and reform the VA’s management structure.”
