WASHINGTON, DC- Following the nomination of Elena Kagan for the United States Supreme Court, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released the following statement:

"Confirmations of U.S. Supreme Court nominees are one of the most important and enduring decisions made by the U.S. Senate.  I look forward to meeting with Elena Kagan and asking substantive questions on her judicial philosophy and prior experience.  Before the Senate vote on her confirmation, I will closely follow her confirmation hearing and consider Elena Kagan’s academic credentials, legal experience, judicial temperament, character and judicial philosophy.

“Elena Kagan is a legal scholar who has demonstrated a commitment to public service.  As an educator, public servant and scholar she has a record of examining the real world impacts of legislation and legal rulings.  She broke new ground as the first woman to be Dean of Harvard Law School and, if confirmed, she would be the fourth woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court and it would mark the first time that three women served at the same time.”
