WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs, released the following statement on marking Greece National Day:

“It is my privilege to congratulate the people of Greece and all the Greek-Americans in Pennsylvania as they mark the Hellenic Republic’s 190th National Day. On March 21, 1821 Bishop Germanos of Patras declared the independence of the Greece from the Ottoman Empire.  Since then, Greece’s history and culture has contributed so much to our common humanity, science and philosophy and art.

“From the earliest days of our own republic, America has looked to Greece for inspiration, and the Hellenic community in the U.S. has enriched our society and culture. Greek-Americans are leaders and innovators, and their presence here helps cement the historic bonds that hold our two nations close.

“As we celebrate Greece’s independence, I am proud to stand in solidarity with Greek-Americans in Pennsylvania and across the country. Happy National Day.”
