WASHINGTON, DC—U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released the following statement on his vote to confirm Elena Kagan as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court:

“Elena Kagan is a legal scholar who has demonstrated a commitment to public service.  As an educator, public servant and scholar she has a record of examining the real world impacts of legislation and legal rulings.

“She was the first woman to be Dean of Harvard Law School and will become the fourth woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court.  It also marks the first time that three women will serve at the same time.

“After meeting with Elena Kagan, monitoring her confirmation hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee and examining her academic credentials, legal experience, judicial temperament, character and judicial philosophy, I decided to vote to confirm her as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.”
