Washington DC- U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), a member of the National Security Working Group and Co-Chair of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Terrorism Caucus, released a statement following a new report by Save the Children which detailed the plight of Syria’s children during the country’s war:

“This horrifying report on the plight of Syria’s children confirms some of the worst fears I’ve had about the conflict in Syria. Families and children in Syria are living a nightmare. This report underscores that children are going without and dying because they lack basic vaccinations and treatment for common problems like asthma. These new revelations about the horrors that are impacting children in Syria should be a wakeup call to the entire international community. The Obama Administration and the American people deserve credit for the billions in humanitarian aid that has been delivered to the Syrian people but we must work with the international community to strengthen our efforts.  I have been calling for greater logistical, financial, and material support to vetted elements of the moderate opposition for more than two years. Aiding these members of the opposition could put Syria on a path toward rebuilding its public health infrastructure and helping these children. I’ll continue to push for passage of my bipartisan legislation, the Syria Democratic Transition Act, that would bolster support for vetted members of the opposition and aid innocent Syrian civilians who have been victims of this violent conflict.”
