WASHINGTON, DC-Following Senate passage of the economic stimulus package, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released the following statement:

“The plan passed today includes key improvements over the House-passed bill. Pennsylvania’s senior citizens and disabled veterans will benefit from the compromise worked out today.

“It is clear what happened here: Republicans in the U.S. Senate defied a bipartisan consensus and obstructed the passage of a more effective economic stimulus package. The plan that I supported and that was narrowly defeated yesterday included a number of items that would have helped our economy recover. In particular, it would have helped low-income families and seniors heat their homes and it would have extended unemployment benefits – something economists say is the most effective way of stimulating the economy.

“This should not be the end of the discussion in Washington about the state of our fiscal and economic policy. There is much more work to be done to invest in our future and ensure the needs of Pennsylvanians are addressed.”
