Specter & Casey Announce Confirmation of Thomas Hardiman for Circuit Court

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S Senators Arlen Specter, ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Bob Casey, the junior senator from Pennsylvania, announced today that the U.S. Senate has confirmed the nomination of Thomas Michael Hardiman to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. The Senate confirmed Mr. Hardiman with a unanimous vote of 95-0.

"I am pleased that Judge Thomas Hardiman has been confirmed to serve on the United States Third Circuit Court of Appeals," said Senator Specter. "Thomas Hardiman has an outstanding record both academically and professionally. I know him personally, and I think he will serve on the Third Circuit with great distinction."

"Thomas Hardiman has established a solid record on the District Court," said Senator Casey. "He is well qualified to serve on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals."

The President nominated Mr. Hardiman to be a Judge in the Third Circuit Court of Appeals on September 13, 2006. On November 14, 2006 he received a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Mr. Hardiman was renominated in the 110th Congress and unanimously approved by the Judiciary Committee on March 8, 2007. The American Bar Association has given Mr. Hardiman a unanimous well-qualified rating.

Judge Hardiman is currently a judge on the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, where he has served since November 2003. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors in 1987. He earned his J.D. with honors from Georgetown University Law Center in 1990.

Following graduation, Judge Hardiman joined the Washington, D.C. office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meager & Flom. In 1992 he moved to Pittsburgh and joined the firm of Cindrich & Titus. In 1999, Judge Hardiman joined Reed Smith LLP as a partner in the litigation department until he took the bench in 2003.

Judge Hardiman is actively involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh, Inc., where he has been a Director since 1995, served as President from 1999-2000, and presently chairs the Board of Excellence Committee.
