WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation is awarding PennDOT over $4.2 million in emergency relief funding in the wake of flooding caused by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.
“This assistance is a positive step toward recovery for the communities that are still rebuilding from the devastating effects of Irene and Lee,” Senator Casey said. “I will continue to push the federal government to provide as much help as possible to the communities affected by storms in Pennsylvania.”
Last month, Senator Casey urged FEMA to prioritize disaster relief funding to Pennsylvania over states that do not have the same harsh winter climates that make repair work difficult.
Repair work eligible through the funding announced today includes emergency repairs needed to restore essential traffic, minimize the extent of damage and protect remaining facilities as well as permanent repairs necessary to restore highways to pre-disaster condition. This funding applies to federal-aid eligible highways in areas affected by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.
