WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senators Bob Casey and Arlen Specter announced today that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded Community Integrated Services Network of Pennsylvania $1,400,001 in federal funding to expand the use of health information technology. Funding has been allocated through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

“I am pleased recovery funding has been awarded to a Pennsylvania organization to promote the expansion of health information technology,” said Senator Casey. “The increased use of health information technology is an important aspect of our efforts to reform our health care system because it improves the overall quality of health care and reduces costs.”

“Health Information Technology is a significant component of the discussion on health care reform,” Senator Specter said.  “Funding for programs such as the one in Wormleysburg allows for easier access to information and a more reliable system.  I am glad to see stimulus funds being used to progress our medical system.”

The funding is a portion of the $2 billion allotted to HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) under the ARRA to expand health care services to low-income and uninsured individuals through its health center program. HRSA-supported health centers treated 17 million patients in 2008, 40 percent of whom have no health insurance.
