WASHINGTON, DC—U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs, released the following statement on India’s Independence Day:

“I wish the people of the Republic of India a very joyful independence day this August 15.  India and the United States have a strong friendship based on mutual interests and shared values.  Both countries were founded on principles of democracy, liberty, and justice.  Today, India and the United States work together to promote economic prosperity and global peace and stability.  Pennsylvania is home to a vibrant Indian-American community, whose members provide leadership in many fields including health, education, science, and industry.  I am proud to represent this immensely productive and culturally rich community.  The independence India achieved sixty-four years ago through peaceful and democratic means is truly cause for celebration, and I wish you all the best on this very special day.
