WASHINGTON, DC— U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) has urged the Commanding General of the 99th Regional Support Command to support a request to rename the Forks Township U.S. Army Reserve Center after Emmaus native Sergeant Ashly Lynn Moyer, who was killed in action during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

“Through her heroic service, Sergeant Moyer served her country with honor worthy of our remembrance,” Senator Casey wrote. “I believe that changing the name of the center to the Sergeant Ashly Lynn Moyer U.S. Army Reserve Center would be a fitting tribute to a soldier who gave the ultimate sacrifice for her country.”

Sergeant Moyer, who was trained and housed at the Forks Township U.S. Army Reserve Center, was killed in Iraq when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near her vehicle. In his letter, Senator Casey cited Sergeant Moyer’s numerous military accolades and distinctions, including the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart Medal, as justification for the memorial.

A copy of the letter is below.

Dear Major General Waff:

It is my understanding that Lieutenant Colonel Stacy Garrity, the commanding officer of the Forks Township U.S. Army Reserve Center, has requested a memorial for Sergeant Ashly Lynn Moyer in accordance with Army Regulation 1-33, the Army Memorial Program. This Reserve Center has trained and housed many brave soldiers.  The purpose of this letter is to urge you to support Lieutenant Colonel Garrity’s request to honor one of these fine soldiers. I believe that changing the name of the center to the Sergeant Ashly Lynn Moyer U.S. Army Reserve Center would be a fitting tribute to a soldier who gave the ultimate sacrifice for her country.

In March 2007, Sergeant Moyer was killed in action while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom when an improvised explosive device detonated near her unit’s vehicle. Over the course of her career, her honors and decorations consisted of the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, and several Army Achievement Medals. Through her heroic service, Sergeant Moyer served her country with honor worthy of our remembrance.

Thank you in advance for the consideration of my views.

Sincerely,

Robert P. Casey Jr.
United States Senate
