WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senators Bob Casey and Arlen Specter announced today that the Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded $616,815 in federal funding for Shenango Valley Shuttle Service (SVSS) in Sharon, Pennsylvania. This funding, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will provide new buses for Sharon public transportation.
“I am pleased that this funding has been granted to the Shenango Valley as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,” Senator Casey said. “Expanding bus routes will give more Pennsylvanians access to convenient public transportation so that they can easily reach job opportunities and help local budgets.”
“I am pleased that stimulus funding is being used to advance important transportation projects in Pennsylvania.” Specter said. “The expansion of public transportation will help ease congestion on our roadways and increase ridership throughout the region.”
Today’s grant is part of the Urbanized Area Formula Fund, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. These grants provide operating assistance to urban areas with populations of more than 50,000.
The funds will allow SVSS to purchase three additional buses. The SVSS will be able to expand current routes, maintain and improve the transit service across the Shenango Valley. The funds also will be used for renovation projects at the Hermitage SVSS Maintenance/Dispatch Office and Maintenance Office. Furthermore, this grant will finance the purchase of route signs, computer hardware/software, shop equipment, security equipment and an upgraded radio system.
