WASHINGTON, DC– U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) today released the following statement on the passing of civil rights leader and former Pittsburgh-area resident, Dorothy Height:

“The death of Dorothy Height is a great loss for our country and our Commonwealth.

“Dorothy was a strong fighter for social justice, equal rights and eliminating racism.  As the longtime president of the National Council of Negro Women and winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Dorothy was the preeminent female voice of the civil rights movement.

“I had the opportunity to meet Dorothy several times over the last few years and I was moved by her unrelenting passion and her ability to inspire others to action.  I was honored to have her attend my annual Black History Month celebration this year.

“Terese and I will keep Dorothy’s family in our thoughts and prayers.”
