Washington, D.C.  – U.S. Senator Bob Casey is releasing the following statement on the passing of Peter Buttenwieser:

“Today, I mourn the loss of my dear friend Peter Buttenwieser.  A scion of a wealthy family, Peter chose to humbly use his privilege to support his community and our Commonwealth.  He shaped a generation of young people as a teacher, working in classrooms from North Carolina to Uganda.  As a school principal and later an education consultant, Peter worked to improve Philadelphia’s schools and championed the rights of children with special needs.

It would probably come as a surprise to those who knew him in that setting that Peter would also go on to become one of the largest donors to the Democratic Party, spending his later years supporting candidates who promoted the progressive values in which he so deeply believed.  He spent every day of his life working to make the world a better place through his work, his philanthropy and his political activism.  One of the earliest supporters of my first Senate campaign, Peter also became one of my most cherished friends.  I admired him and I will miss him.”
