Villanova Defeated The UNC Tar Heels 77-74 in the NCAA Championship Game

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) and Pat Toomey (R-PA) announced they have introduced a resolution to honor the Villanova Wildcats and their NCAA championship victory on April 4, 2016.  The Wildcats soared to victory against the University of North Carolina Tar Heels with a winning shot made by Villanova Junior Kris Jenkins in the final seconds of the game. Villanova now holds two national men’s basketball titles for winning NCAA championships in 1985 and 2016.

“The Wildcats' win last night is not only a testament to the dedication and hard work of Coach Wright and the players, but also to the entire Villanova community of students, alumni, and loyal fans for supporting this team every year, win or lose,” Senator Casey said. “I know that I join the entire Pennsylvania delegation in extending my heartfelt congratulations to the entire Villanova community.”

”With Jay Wright at the helm, the Villanova Wildcats – led by Ryan Arcidiacono and Kris Jenkins – proved themselves elite all season long. Their performance in the NCAA Tournament was no different,” said Senator Toomey. “Their championship victory was the most dramatic and exciting finish to a basketball game that I can recall. Congratulations to Villanova and its fans for this remarkable achievement.”

The entire NCAA tournament was a compilation of many records for the Wildcats. For four out of the five tournament games, Villanova scored more than 85 points each game.  In its Final Four game against Oklahoma, the Wildcats had the biggest margin of victory in any Final Four game, sweeping past the Sooners by 44 points . Villanova was also shooting over 58 percent from the field during the tournament. That's the highest ever since the 64-team bracket was introduced in 1985, the year Villanova shot more than 70 percent in a game and won their first championship title.
