In Letter Senator Cites Expertise of Workforce, Impact of Jobs on Region’s Economy

Washington DC- U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) announced that he has written a letter to Bernardo Hees, the newly named CEO of the Heinz Company, urging him to maintain Pittsburgh jobs as he assumes a leadership role at the company. In his letter, Senator Casey cited the role that Heinz jobs play in the region’s economy and the expertise of the company’s workforce in making the case for jobs.

“For years workers at Heinz have been a major part of Pittsburgh’s economy. It’s vital that Heinz and its workers remain a driver of economic growth in Southwestern Pennsylvania,” Senator Casey said. “Pittsburgh’s skilled workforce and its educational institutions will serve as an excellent base for Heinz to maintain and create more jobs.”

Dear Mr. Hees:

Congratulations on your appointment as CEO of the H.J. Heinz Company. As you prepare to make this transition, I hope that you will consider the importance of the valuable work and expertise that H.J. Heinz employees have provided to the company for almost 150 years.

As you are aware, Pittsburgh has been the home of the H.J. Heinz Company since 1869. I am proud to represent the 225 headquarters employees, along with approximately 1,000 employees under the Heinz North America division. Their focus on integrity, innovation and results has led the H.J. Heinz Company to national and international success. The Pittsburgh community takes pride in the history of the H.J. Heinz Company.  Given the significance of the company, I strongly encourage you to minimize the effect of sale on the Heinz employees in the region.

In addition, Heinz plays an important role in Pittsburgh’s philanthropic community, providing critical support to charitable organizations in the region. I am pleased to hear that Berkshire Hathaway and 3G Capital have pledged to continue support of community initiatives and related investments.

As a U.S. Senator representing Pennsylvania, I am always proud to use Heinz products, and to represent its employees, who have proven themselves dedicated to the success of the Heinz brand. Once the acquisition is completed, I welcome the opportunity to meet with you, and discuss your plans for the future of the H.J. Heinz Company.

Sincerely,

Robert P. Casey, Jr.

United States Senator
